Zaryadye Concert Hall brings inspirational architecture to Moscow with HI-MACS®

The architecture studio Reserve turns the Zaryadye concert hall in Moscow into one of the most modern in the world

One of the most modern music venues in the world, the Zaryadye Concert Hall in Moscow, Russia, has recently opened its doors and incorporates two performance halls and a recording studio. A large transformable space with a height of 20 metres, the concert hall is a perfect acoustic instrument. Latest generation engineering solutions, materials and technologies integrated into the building will enable resident musicians to bring their most ambitious ideas to life. 6,000 square metres of HI-MACS® Natural Acrylic Stone has been used for the vast interior in order to create an ambitious and elevating, state-of-the-art public building, which is a shining example of modern Moscow's ‘Star’ architecture with a respectful nod to the history and heritage of its location.

Thanks to the seamless quality of HI-MACS®, the interior fabrication flows beautifully from elegantly curvaceous balconies and stairwells to the main concert hall with its foyer, multi-layered ceiling with light effects and stage design. Offering a stunning visual contrast with ribbed mahogany surfaces, the Diamond White HI-MACS® really comes alive at night, when the reflection of the interior is projected on to the dark space outside. Spotlights appear as floating stars, creating a cosmic display that's out of this world.

In order to create impact and an interior that would never be forgotten, the architects at Reserve chose HI-MACS® solid surface material for both its aesthetic and practical qualities. The finishing material needed to be hardwearing, easy to maintain and, importantly, fire resistant. As a non-porous material that can be seamlessly moulded into curves and shapes, HI-MACS® is also simple to clean and any scratches that do appear over time can swiftly be removed with a quick polish. Along with stairwells and balconies, HI-MACS® was also chosen for the bar counters of the two cafés as well as bathroom countertops. In addition, the railing of the stairs sweeps and turns into attractive bench seating on the first floor.

To fulfil the combined brief of aesthetics and functionality, the selected surface material needed to create a seamless effect over a large area, with curvilinear designs that employ flowing forms. HI-MACS® is often chosen to create objects designed using parametric modelling thanks to its thermoforming capabilities. The continuity of the balcony and stair parapets and railings demonstrate how simply this solid surface material can flow from one to the other. To break up the expanse of smooth, seamless white HI-MACS®, the cashier's office area was designed using a grooved finish in the white HI-MACS® and contrasting mahogany. This follows through to the adjacent wardrobe walls where HI-MACS® in Black was used to create a 3D decoration effect in the panelling.

HI-MACS® is the ultimate versatile, flexible material perfect for public, residential and commercial projects. It can be thermoformed and moulded into any shape and is widely used for interior and architectural applications. Made from a mix of acrylic, minerals and natural pigments, it creates a smooth, non-porous and visually seamless surface that meets the highest standards for quality, aesthetics, fabrication, function and hygiene.

Another benefit of this flexible material is its translucency, which is perfect for foyer interiors where light plays on a vertical rhythm and in the afternoons, shadows on windows and columns draw shadows on the Diamond White planes. In the evening, the surfaces come alive with light lines on the balconies and illuminated stepped ceilings. HI-MACS® significantly improves the scope of 3D modelling in architecture, and opens up new horizons for interior and façade applications.
