Republic of Fritz Hansen™ launches the Oxford™ chair back into its original form in wood veneer to commemorate the 50th anniversary of St. Catherine's College in Oxford, UK and the Oxford™ chair series. Designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1962, the Oxford chair was specifically designed for the main dining hall of St. Catherine's College.
Today, the Oxford chair is more commonly recognized as a fully upholstered version and furnishes conference rooms, meeting tables and home offices around the world. In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of St. Catherine's College and in paying tribute to the truly remarkable Oxford chair design, Fritz Hansen introduces the Oxford chair back into its original wooden form.
Originally manufactured in one piece of laminated English Oak wood veneer, the high back Oxford chair took prominent place at the high table in the dining hall of the college. The seating was designed to accommodate the principal and faculty, whilst the students sat on low benches at the long communal tables - somewhat reminiscent of the monastery universities of the Middle Ages. The original Oxford chair in wood veneer from 1962 continues to line the high table in the main dining hall up until this day and is a hallmark of Fritz Hansen's sustainable quality and collection of timeless design icons.
The ‘new’ original Oxford chair will be launched in October 2012 and introduced in Oak veneer in a mid-height version, featuring a front upholstery on the base of the seat and the back rest. The front upholstery will be launched in 3 colours; Light Blue, Petrol Blue and Orange, which highlights the elegant slim line curves of the veneer shell whilst adding additional comfort.
