The Ambassador Hotel in Benidorm (Spain), is located in C/Gerona No. 39, in what is known as the English area, on a very active leisure area of the city. The hotel was built 30 years ago and had suffered some partial refurbishings with the result of a strange mixture of ages without a distinctive design. Jaime Martinez, the second generation on the business, took the managenment of the hotel and wanted to put the hotel in the avangarde with a distinctive design, fresh and bright. The hotel compound includes 2 buildings, after designing the principal areas in the first building we started with the lobby of this building. The design concept was to repeat the main features to give unity to the hotel identity introducing a cosyest touch.

To start with the new design first we wanted to act with the flow. We wanted to be natural, intuitive and clear. The design wished to communicate a fresh modernity together with a more particular and special character which reflected the light and culture of the Mediterranean.

The concept was a riverbed with stones eroded by water and wood bleached by the sun. The natural aesthetic makes use of organic and soft shapes, with droplet-like pools of light that were sunk into the ceiling. The lobby takes the form of a cosy enclave, with organic pillars and a design that plays with light.

The primary aspects of the intervention included stone pilars and bench, the ceiling work with organic shapes and the white wood lattice. Dynamic illumination was the icing on the cake in the design, so that the atmosphere in the lobby could by changed to reflect time of day or the requirements of the occasion, instilling an ambience that could vary at the flick of a switch from cool and cosy to mysterious and magical.
