For the fourth time, B-Line has won the “2017 Good Design Award”, a prestigious, international recognition of design. The award-winning product is the Merano lounge chair, designed by the Italo-Finnish duo Raffaella Mangiarotti and Ilkka Suppanen and presented last April at Milan's “Salone del Mobile”.
Merano is a light, refined and elegant lounge chair suited to a number of contexts: public and private, indoors and outdoors. The frame is made up of two separable parts, in painted galvanised steel rod, accommodating four comfortable cushions. By splitting the structure, its volume gets considerably reduced, with markedly less packaging needed: a design solution that makes both transportation and storage particularly smooth. To complement Merano's relaxing trim, there is a courtesy pouf which can double as an occasional seat.
This mix of rationality, linearity, harmony and ergonomics, convinced the international panel of Good Design Award judges that met in New York and San Francisco to select, among thousands of proposals put forward from more than 46 countries, the projects best expressing the values represented by good design.
The “Good Design Award”, established in 1950 by renowned architects such as Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames and Edgar Kaufmann Jr., is still nowadays considered to be one of the most prestigious recognitions at international level for excellence in design on a global scale. Annually organised by the Chicago Museum of Architecture and Design Athenaeum and by The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, it has reached its 67th edition in 2017.
Merano, together with the other winning designs, will feature in the 2017-2018 Good Design Yearbook and will become part of the permanent collection of the Chicago Athenaeum Museum.
