The Cosentino Group Announces its 9th International Cosentino Design Challenge Competition

Internationally recognised Spanish company and market leader in the manufacturing and distribution of innovative surfaces in the world of design and architecture, the Cosentino Group, presents the 9th edition of the international Cosentino Design Challenge. The competition consists of two categories - Architecture and Design, which is open to all students who registered between the years 2014 and 2015 from any school or centre of higher education for design, architecture or interior architecture anywhere in the world.

The Cosentino Design Challenge is an international competition with collaborations from 16 international institutions, schools and universities from as many as four continents: Europe, Asia, Oceania and America:

The competition consists of two categories, Architecture and Design. The main objective is to foster the talent of students who registered between the years of 2014 and 2015 from any school or centre of higher education for design, architecture or interior architecture anywhere in the world.

Participating students must research different conceptual approaches to the configuration of spaces, and the construction materials and systems defining these spaces, while remaining within the guidelines for each category and using materials from Cosentino's® wide range of products in their final projects.

The Design category in this edition of the competition requires the student to reflect on “Cosentino and Celebration”. Students are free to choose their own work area or surface, but should give careful consideration to the relationship between space, the observer and the Cosentino products that must be included in the final project.

The object of the Architecture category is to reflect on the thresholds between cohabitation, play and recreational areas, while experimenting with surfaces. Students should not forget to include at least one Cosentino product in the design for their final project.

The delivery deadline for the final project designs will be 1 June 2015. Each project must be submitted in digital format only via the website: http://www.cosentinodesignchallenge.org/

There are three first prizes of 1,000 euros each for both categories, making an overall total of 6,000 euros in prize money. The decision of the jury, which comprises high profile figures from the world of architecture and design, will be announced during the month of June 2015-

The presentation of prizes for the winners of the previous edition took place last Tuesday in Centro Cibeles, Madrid. Santiago Alfonso: Director of Communication and Marketing for the Cosentino Group, Adelina Salinas: Architect and competition Coordinator and Ricardo Santonja: (I+D+art), Professor at ETSAM, were responsible for this presentation to students, professors and the media.

This event has been supported by a very interesting initial lecture from the Architect Jesús San Vicente on “The importance of design in a company's growth and development”. An architect since 1985, Mr San Vicente now also gives the subject of Projects at the Escuela de Arquitectura in Madrid, and Industrial Design and Exhibitions at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED). He is director of the studio Equipo 01 and has conducted high-profile projects, such as the Interpretation Centre in Roquetas de Mar (Almería), the Ski Museum in Cercedilla (Madrid), the Tourist Centre in Madrid's Plaza Mayor, the exhibition “The architect is present” at the ICO Museum in Madrid, and the La Rioja Pavilion at the 2008 Expo Zaragoza.

This year's venue was also the setting for the presentation of prizes to the winners of the previous edition.
