Brazilian group Maqmóveis makes its international debut at Milan Design Week with the innovative Jataí collection

A leader in the school furniture segment, the company presents a product line focused on the philosophy of collaborative teaching

36 years have passed since 1983 when Maqmóveis, with only four people, started selling typewriters and office furniture. Today, the group is a leader in the school furniture sector in Brazil with two domestic factories and one under construction in Paraguay. With more than 400 employees, the company produces 100 thousand pieces a month.

For the first time, the Maqmóveis will participate at Fuori Salone in Milan and will present at Brazil: Essentially Diverse exhibition, organized by Apex-Brasil at the Museo della Permanente, from 9 to 14 April, the ultra-modern Jataí collection, developed by its design center of innovation and MaqID.

Milan Design Week is a prime event, the perfect opportunity to show our design proposal for the school furniture sector. It represents an achievement for the company and kind of are ward for our highly qualified staff“, says Fábio Costa, the vice-president of Maqmóveis.

Designed by José Machado and Luciana Sobral, Jataí offers to the public a high-quality product, consistent with the evolution of the educational process. “The classroom has increasingly become a sort of project incubator. The teaching techniques havec hanged and the classroom has to be adapted to these new concepts. Collaborative learning requires dynamic spaces and new layout proposals to help students and teachers develop their activities. Jataí was designed to fulfill this need,” explains Brazilian designer Machado.

Ergonomics is another important parameter when we talk about this new furniture Made in Brazil. “Our experience in the development of school furnishings reinforces that the posture during study hours encourages students to be more involved in individual and group activities“, says the designer Luciana Sobral.

The choice of the collection's name is quite original. Jataí is a native Brazilian bee known for producing tasty honey. They (the bees) are a remarkable example of teamwork, so we decided to use the word to name the project.

Jataí furnishing - designed for students from kindergarten to university - are made with carbon steel tubes, which receive an electrostatic painting finish of high resistance and durability. The seats and backs are made of solid wood laminated plywood panels that guarantee thermal comfort and are covered with melamine (laminate) in different colors and textures. Some chairs come with seats and backs in high-density coated foam and 100% polyester fabric in various colors. The minimalist and functional style enhances comfort.

The star of the collection is the Jataí chair, with an honorable mention recognition at Museu da Casa Brasileira Award, in 2018. The triple rotating mechanism, with steel cladding, allows the base, the seat, and the tablet arm (for right- and left-handed users) to move independently. The system makes it possible to position the tablet arm, which makes these at suitable for different users and situations. The tube surrounding the base serves as a footrest and ensures perfect posture for people of any stature.

Maqmóveis is presenting nine pieces of furniture from four types of products at the FuoriSalone. In addition to the award-winning Jataí chair, there will be a cozy low armchair with a small table, three traditional seats in different sizes for different ages - and modular poufs. The complete catalog is composed of over 100 products for very different areas, such as libraries, laboratories, public spaces, and conference rooms.

We are working on new pieces of Jataí collection, including shelves, bookcases, blackboards, other tables, and chairs, which we will present, during the Bett Educar, in São Paulo, Brazil, next May. It is the largest education and technology event in Latin America“, says Fábio Costa, the company's vice-president.
